  • It’s always sad to lose a friend, but even with a new administration, nobody can really trust USA anymore, USA is currently descending deeper into a authoritarian regime, and resistance is effectively being systematically removed. As it is, there seems to be little hope that USA will ever become a functional democracy.

I hope that a better US administration will come after this one and that it will improve the things that can be improved easily (tariffs, visas, rhetoric, and other transactional policies), but at this point Trump has poisoned the well and it will take a generation of good (or at least understandable and workable) behavior by both US parties to rebuild a fraction of the trust and soft power the orange idiot has squandered in barely half a year.

If there’s anything other than simply “very damaged personalities,”I think it’s probably a sense that as celebrities they need to freeze time or even turn it back to stay competitive in their field. When cosmetic procedures work, it’s because doctors communicate the limits of what can be achieved while passing for natural, the patient accepts that, and the work is done well. If any of those pillars breaks, it looks bad. If any of them breaks for a celebrity, it goes viral.

  • For the record, mixing two painkillers without consulting a doctor is also usually a bad idea but way fucking less of a bad idea than taking 13000mg of tylenol in a day.

Basically, if something hurts so much that you might take enough paracetamol/acetaminophen to fuck with your liver then you yes, you should be under a doctor’s care. That said, between my wife and me, we’ve had three or four doctors over the years all be very chill with the idea of alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen after surgery or the like. I guess they work on such different chemical pathways that they don’t have much interaction potential, and keeping under the daily dose of Tylenol in particular is incredibly important, as we’ve seen in this thread.

    1. NFL Football free agency (free transfer)
    2. Same
    3. American college sports, which is in a bit of an existential crisis because it started 130 years ago as roughly equivalent to Oxford and Cambridge doing rowing regattas, but football and basketball have been “wink and nod” U23 professional leagues for 80+ of them, and the legal underpinnings of its version of amateurism are being eroded in the courts. The “transfer portal” is meant to organize the chaos that comes when athletes request to continue their eligibility for an “athletic scholarship” at a new school.
    4. Same
    5. NBA basketball mandatory injury reporting.

by and large, our manufacturing days are behind us.

I agree, but even if one were convinced that they aren’t, the proper way to do it is to use your congressional majority to come up with a package of actual targeted tariffs that phase in over time and thereby incentivize investment, which you can also do by subsidizing industrial development and getting labor on your side (other than the lukewarm conditional support of UAW and only UAW).

This, though, is a stupid and angry old man desperate for a legacy, being counseled by nativists and Christian Nationalists and nothing is coherent or likely to be effective. It’s tearing down the existing system that, for better or worse, people have had to build their lives around, with nothing more than “concepts of a plan” for how to replace it, and with no real intention to have anything new benefit anyone but the super-rich for whom the worst outcomes are delayed megaprojects and lowered spots on a ranked list of billionaires.

  • For everyone elese who didn’t know, the current “Waka Jumping” law in NZ allows the leader of a political party to demand the resignation of a member of Parliament who leaves their party. Sounds like the Greens are wary of the law in general, so they require an internal 75% vote for their leader to request the ejection.

The ejected member will be replaced via a new election, if they represent a district, or by the next person on the party list if they were from the proportional vote.
