I don’t disagree that traditional academia should be reformed, but wanted to nitpick the assertion that assignments shouldn’t be easily completed by LLMs to be of value. Isn’t that analogous to the “I can just do this on a calculator” argument? Learning those tasks from first principles and going through the mechanics of it has value in education (albeit this can be overdone).

I think about this from time to time. I think at some point, even if you’re born into it, you run up against some kind of hedonism wall where your human condition doesn’t know what to do with all your choices and lack of a need to do anything to survive. I’m interested in literature that tries to tackle this.

Yeah like my math on this is rusty, but say you were given $5000 a day for 10 days, starting when Columbus sailed in 1492. Assuming 2% annual interest isn’t it like ($5000*10)*(1+2%)^(2025-1492) = $1.9B
