  • Oh for sure, it’s definitely better for the cats and the environment to keep them inside. I just don’t think perfect should be the enemy of good.

I’ve just met some people who are militant to the point where they want to euthanize all outdoor cats. When in reality we could make a ton of progress by just feeding strays and getting them spayed and neutered.

I have about half a dozen of the neighborhood ferals that I’ve gotten spayed and neutered. They won’t ever be lovey dovy indoor cats, but they are fed, lazy, and completely uninterested in our bird feeders anymore.

  • Eh, it’s honestly not as bad as what most people make it out to be. The idea that non-feral cats are blood thirsty extinction machines is largely the product of people not being very good at interpreting scientific studies.

The majority of studies about cats being killing tens of billions of birds a year is based on data extrapolated from a few studies of feral cats or the introduction of cats to islands. Introducing any new species of plant or animal can be devastating to island habitats, so that data shouldn’t be utilized when applied to the norm. And the studies of birds being killed on the mainland confirm that the majority of birds are being killed by feral cats, who have a much much greater predatory drive than the normal house cat.

If we take away any understanding from these studies it should be that if we want to save more birds, people should try and domesticate feral cats, or at least feed them to minimize their predation of birds.

  • AI demand is driving huge investment in production of carbon-free energy at scale

I feel like AI companies are creating a large demand for energy no matter where it comes from, and feel like having some minor investments in potential carbon free energy is mainly a marketing ploy or something to point at if they ever get sued.

Immediate term with Small Modular fission Reactors (SMRs)

Tbh, the big problem with nuclear in america is that we don’t really have the federal power needed to actually coordinate and mandate the needed infrastructure for it. The US is so obsessed with state rights that we’re susceptible to nimby attacks and disputes at the local and State level governments.

To actually cut through the red tape, we’d have to empower federal agencies for a good reason for once, and I’m not very optimistic about our current political climate.

and immediate term, multiple commercial fusion energy plants are being built.

Yeah… I think it would be more accurate to say that fusion experimental sites are being built. Most nuclear engineers I’ve heard talk about fusion are still skeptical about fusion being viable in the next 20 years.

  • You do provide a service though. Do the people who own the apartments actively do anything in particular that makes sense for them to own it completely?

Who do you think would have a more vested interest in running the apartments in a functional and efficient manner, the people maintaining the buildings or the people who see it as one of their many investment properties.

Socialism isn’t just about what’s fair, it’s also about creating a more efficient system to distribute labour and resources.

  • Netanyahu has stated that Israel will move to annex parts of the Gaza Strip if a ceasefire agreement with Hamas is not reached

Soo, this basically is a guarantee that no actual cease fire will ever happen…

It’s still upsetting that the west in general still fails to challenge the government of Israel’s narrative when it comes to any “cease fire”. First of all, a cease fire generally implies that both sides are still engaged in hostilities. When in reality a cease fire in this scenario is more of the offer of the cessation of a genocide, which they could do unilaterally at anytime.

Secondly, there was already a “cease fire” deal where Hamas returned hostages and Israel failed to stop hostilities and never released their hostages. There is no reason to assume Israel is ever going to negotiate with any sort of good faith, and it should be called out to by anyone within reaching distance of a microphone.

  • I mean…who cares if Hamas steals some of the food? Are we thinking that the few remaining Hamas members are capable of eating it all, or that the war has been so ineffective that they have a huge military force able to eat enough food to feed hundreds of thousands of people’s worth of aid?

It’s such an obvious excuse to just starve an entire population that it’s a huge shame that every journalist and politician doesn’t call them out on it. Israel has become a nation that exists in a constant state of cognitive disorder.

  • And there are some dudes who only want sex and aren’t willing to put any work into building an actual relationship outside the bedroom. My point being is that there are lots of different attitudes out there, but the vast majority of people are just normal people wanting healthy relationships.

I think social media has really segregated people from reality and has warped people’s interpretation of others. It feels as if everyone believes they are the last “normal” person in society and everyone else is just intrinsically antagonistic.

  • Not being a lazy bum or misogonyst is the bare minimum (as it should be).

Idk, just judging by any post containing gender discourse on Lemmy…seems to be a pretty big hurdle for a lot of dudes.

You have to jump over all of them. Everything below that and the other person will feel as if they are settling.

That may just be a product of being younger. By the time you get to my age both men and women seem to be wanting to settle down and are more likely to compromise with the idea of an imperfect partnership.

  • And if it’s not Rogan, it’s some other right-adjacent influencer. It’s fucking weird too. They’re regular dudes, helping old ladies on the street and supporting a neighbor. Then suddenly, they crack and share how terrible women are.

Yeah… Idk what it’s all about. A lot of the girls in the company have issues with dudes who like the idea of hooking up with a dancer, then as soon as they get in a committed relationship they want them to quit because they get insanely jealous of other people watching them dance.

The younger crowd of men seem to be super possessive and simultaneously believe that girls only have sex to get things they want and at the same time are massive sluts who can’t be trusted not to cheat…
