    I’m 42 and it has worked out pretty well so far, honestly.

    I joined the military, got good reviews (called “marks” for us), and tested well when I tried. Now I make good money, have the support of a lot of people in different departments and largely able to work on the projects I want, have gotten my #1 pick for station every time I have had to transfer, and will be retiring in 4 years with a bunch of ties to the community to keep me involved with things I enjoy after.

    I get a lot of this is luck, and privilege (e.g. not everybody can join the military), and other factors. And regardless how hard I worked, many things ended up being popularity contests, so I missed some opportunties that way. But at no point did I feel like being nice and hardworking worked anything but in my own favor.



  • A good use I’ve seen for AI (or particularly ChatGPT) is employee reviews and awards (military). A lot of my coworkers (and subordinates) have used it, and it’s generally a good way to fluff up the wording for people who don’t write fluffy things for a living (we work on helicopters, our writing is very technical, specific, and generally with a pre-established template).

    I prefer reading the specifics and can fill out the fluff myself, but higher-ups tend to want “how it benefitted the service” and fitting in the terminology from the rubric.

    I don’t use it because I’m good at writing that stuff. Not because it’s my job, but because I’ve always been into writing. I don’t expect every mechanic to do the same, though, so having things like ChatGPT can make an otherwise onerous (albeit necessary) task more palatable.


  • You and others try desperately to bend and twist history to be something different than it was. It’s pretty simple: the Civil War started because the South seceded, and the North said “No.”

    So the question is only why the South seceded. And I guess we can never know for certain, because it’s not like we can get a prioritized list of reasons for secession from each state that seceded OH WAIT YES WE CAN.

    Each state listed their causes for secession, and primary amongst their concerns was slavery, whether is was concern for Northerners eventually getting rid of slavery, or upset that slaves escaping to the North were not being returned, or even that some Northern states were abolishing slavery within their states.

    Yes, some Northern states still benefitted from slavery at the time, and yes, Lincoln was prepared to grant slavery in perpetuity to the slave-holding states, so it’s clear that the Northern states were not fighting to end slavery. However, that doesn’t change the main two things that led to the Civil War:

    1. The Southern states seceded to preserve slavery.

    2. The Northern states said “No.”


  • The primary responsibility for any employer Is to make sure its employees have “enough” wage.

    I disagree, and I think it works in exactly the same way as the initial question. The primary reaponsibility of the employer is the success of the company. The success of the company is at least partially dependent on keeping good employees with good wage, benefits, and culture. You can get short-term profits out of shorting those things (just like an employee can scrape by temporarily with shit wages, poor benefits, and bad work culture), but in the long term that hurts everyone involved.


  • I prefer root canals as a comparison.

    Some people don’t brush their teeth well or often, or eat a bunch of sweets, and need root canals. It may be that they could have taken action to prevent it by exercising good oral hygeine, but they aren’t out there getting root canals for fun.

    And then some people have a genetic predisposition to cavities and tooth decay, and even with good oral hygiene they still might end up requiring a root canal. And some people end up having an injury that results in a root canal, completely outside of their control.

    But nobody is out there getting “recreational” root canals. The idea is stupid. And absolutely nobody is trying to restrict access to root canals because some people don’t brush well, or gasp had more than one root canal. Because root canals, though not the preferred choice, are a necessary part of dental care.



  • It’s pretty simple. If they can’t just walk away and choose not to talk to you, don’t shoot your shot.

    If they are going through security to get on a scheduled flight, and you are security, do not shoot your shot.

    If you are their boss, in your office, do not shoot your shot.

    If you are purchasing something from them, do not shoot your shot.

    If you are at a bar, and you are polite, shoot your shot. And accept a no graciously.

    If you are at a park, and you are both walking your dogs, try to start up a conversation (not shoot your shot). And accept a no graciously.

    If you are the President of the United States, and you have a 19-year-old intern in your office, DO NOT shoot your shot.

    Seems pretty simple to me. I’m a man in my 40s, have started plenty of conversations with women (and men) in public, and have never had any negative experiences from it (other than coming across some VERY strange people). Weird.
