The number of people I encounter, even on Lemmy, that genuinely believe and rigorously argue that being able to install or distribute software on devices you own is actually bad because “security” is beyond horrifying to me. They have been brainwashed into thinking that corporate monopolies are not only acceptable but desirable because you can completely and blindly trust Mom’s Old Fashioned Robot Oil to make all your decisions for you, for a modest fee and no opting out, of course.

This is why society is collapsing.

  • We know that Steve considered AR to be the next major leap in personal technology, but that vision has almost nothing in common with Vision Pro. AR should be able to change and enhance your environment, not separate you from it. Even if you consider Vision Pro a demonstration of the concept owing to the fact that the technology to make it properly doesn’t exist, it fails at even that. It fails at every meaningful use case of AR. AR is not “phone apps floating in space”, it’s about recognizing and augmenting the world around you, the objects around you, and the actual physical space that we inhabit. I’ve given up on ever seeing proper AR in my lifetime, even as a bulky, ugly, expensive proof of concept.

But also, the qualification of certain types of art as “degenerate” is a symptom of second feature of Ur-Fascism, “traditionalism.”

Traditionalism implies the rejection of modernism. Both Fascists and Nazis worshiped technology, while traditionalist thinkers usually reject it as a negation of traditional spiritual values. However, even though Nazism was proud of its industrial achievements, its praise of modernism was only the surface of an ideology based upon Blood and Earth (Blut und Boden). The rejection of the modern world was disguised as a rebuttal of the capitalistic way of life, but it mainly concerned the rejection of the Spirit of 1789 (and of 1776, of course). The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.

  • As soon as I was old enough to understand what “pledge allegiance” meant, I refused to participate. It’s antithetical to everything America was supposed to be about. Allegiance is something a subject owes to a sovereign. If you live somewhere that still has ties to monarchy like Canada or the UK, then it would make some amount of sense. In the US, however, it’s literally nothing more than authoritarian indoctrination.

Needless to say, that got me in trouble a lot, especially in new schools or with new teachers.

Mexican coke tastes better because it uses slightly less sweetener and twice the amount of sodium. There’s a YouTube video by chemist George Zaidan that did a chemistry deep dive on the topic. The acidity of coke breaks down the cane sugar (sucrose) into fructose and glucose (which is the composition of HFCS). There is no difference in flavor between cane sugar and HFCS in acidic beverages, but there are often other differences in the recipes that improve taste. Most notably, sodium content.
